Counseling involves a structured, collaborative approach where your counselor will get to know you, your relationship dynamics, and identify any key issues that need to be addressed. Your counselor will work with you to develop goals to work on during sessions, and throughout sessions you’ll work on improving communication, working through conflict, and developing practical tools to navigate relationship challenges long after counseling ends.

Couples Counseling FAQs

HIDDEN - DO NOT DELETE
Do you offer online appointments for couples counseling?

Yes, Start My Wellness offers convenient online counseling sessions for couples and individuals looking for support. We offer in-person appointments at our Ferndale clinic and online sessions for residents across the state of Michigan. Sessions function largely the same as in-person and provide the same quality of support while offering flexible options for busy couples.

Is couples counseling the same as couples therapy?
Couples counseling and couples therapy are largely interchangeable and provide the same quality of support for couples. The main difference between them is the type of professional providing mental healthcare: licensed counselors provide professional counseling while licensed therapists provide psychotherapeutic services, but the overall process is largely the same.
Does insurance cover couples counseling?

Many insurance providers cover couples therapy but coverage varies by plan. It’s best to check with your insurance provider to confirm they cover behavioral health services. We are in-network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Priority Health for Michigan residents.

At Start My Wellness, we will inform you about your eligibility and the services cost before treatment begins. If you have any more questions, check out our cost of therapy page and contact us if you have any more questions.

What type of professional is best for couples counseling?
Licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) specialize in helping couples resolve differences, handle conflicts constructively, improve communication, and find enjoyment in shared activities and interests. However, licensed counselors and therapists with specialization in couples counseling are also highly qualified to meet with and help support couples.
What is the most common issue couples discuss in counseling?

Communication issues and resolving conflicts are the most common topics brought up in couples counseling. Many couples struggle with a lack of communication, differences in values, or not being heard, especially if they come from different backgrounds. Online couples therapy addresses communication issues through education and exercises that help partners relate and rediscover the emotional connection that brought them together.
