About Me: Alyssa Mull

I am deeply grateful for my diverse experiences in the healthcare field, which have shaped my journey and led me to mental health as my ultimate chosen specialty. My career began as a bedside nurse, where I worked in both oncology and intensive care. These roles allowed me to connect intimately with patients and families as they navigated significant health challenges. My time as a bedside nurse helped shape my identity as I strongly connected to the values of the nursing profession including compassion and integrity.

After my time in bedside nursing, I devoted nearly twenty years to serving as a nurse midwife. Guiding families through the transformative experience of birth has always been a source of enthusiasm and respect for me. I found great meaning in working with families through this intimate and pivotal time. Throughout my work as a midwife, I encountered many clients who struggled with past or present life challenges, which inspired me to pursue a deeper involvement in mental health care. This realization motivated me to earn my certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Today, I am looking forward to applying the knowledge and experience I have gained across various healthcare settings and in specialized training, to help clients achieve their best possible mental health and wellness.

My Unique Approach to Therapy

Reflecting on my own journey and the experiences of others, I hold a deep respect for the transformative power of psychotherapy. I have seen firsthand its ability to positively impact mental health and to encourage meaningful change. My approach centers on appreciating and accepting the individuality of each person, helping clients explore what drives them and understand how their past experiences influence their current thoughts and behaviors.

I am committed to shared decision-making in medical care, ensuring that clients are leading in making choices about their treatment. I honor each person's beliefs and preferences, whether they choose to address their challenges solely through psychotherapy or prefer to incorporate psychopharmacology for symptom management.

I honor each client’s past and present circumstances and believe that working through our memories and experiences allows us to engage more positively and effectively with our present and future. I believe that each person holds this ability to work towards leading a peaceful, centered life.

Specialized & Extended Training

During my advanced practice education in mental health, I sought out additional training in motivational interviewing and addiction counseling, allowing me to support clients through challenging circumstances with confidence and compassion. I trained in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), which helps clients obtain relief from persistent problems in their present life caused by past traumatic experiences. I possess experience delivering care to individuals from diverse age groups and backgrounds, recognizing the unique identity of each person and supporting clients in the identification and fulfilment of their treatment goals.

I value ongoing education and intend to further training in trauma-based psychotherapy for diverse populations. This year I plan to pursue additional certification in peripartum mental health which will allow me to blend my past and present professional experience to most ideally support families in need. I also plan to seek further training in life review therapy to improve my work with gerontological populations.
