Family Counseling FAQs

HIDDEN - DO NOT DELETE
What is family counseling?

Family counseling, or family therapy, is a therapeutic technique that focuses on addressing relationship dynamics within a family unit, which can include blood-relatives, caregivers, and close loved ones who are actively engaged within the family unit. Family therapy seeks to improve communication, resolve disputes, establish effective boundaries, and address specific issues that arise within the family.

How does family counseling differ from individual counseling?

Individual therapy will always involve just you. Family therapy involves the “family unit,” which is anyone in the immediate family and close loved ones that may not be blood-related. Additionally, family therapy aims to strengthen the family unit and explore the relationships between family members.

Is there a difference between family counseling and family therapy?
Counseling and therapy are often used interchangeably; the primary difference is the mental healthcare professional providing treatment. Psychotherapists usually focus on the root causes of issues and how to address them; counselors work more broadly to address current challenges and offer problem-solving skills to address them.
How do I know if my family needs counseling?

Any family can benefit from counseling and learn ways to strengthen their emotional connections. However, if there are significant behavioral problems, ongoing conflicts, or significant life changes such as divorce, you may consider family counseling or therapy. Early intervention can help prevent ongoing issues from escalating.

What is the Most Popular Family Therapy?
The most commonly used family therapies are structural family therapy and systemic family therapy, both of which deal with family dynamics–how family members interact with one another. Structured family therapy focuses on power dynamics and the hierarchy of members, aiming to improve the family’s “structure.” Systemic family therapy emphasizes understanding the family as a system and how family members interact with one another to affect the whole “system.”
How long does family counseling typically last?
The exact timeframe of family counseling depends on the type of therapy and your family’s unique needs and goals. Family counseling typically lasts between 12-20 sessions on average, with weekly or bi-monthly sessions. During initial sessions, you’ll establish goals and a timeframe for completing those goals, and your counselor or therapist will always let you know of the timeframe before sessions begin.
Do you offer online appointments for individuals in Royal Oak?

Yes, we offer convenient online family counseling sessions for individuals in Royal Oak. Our online therapists and counselors are licensed to work throughout Michigan and can provide services to anyone who lives in-state. We also offer in-person sessions with offices in Ferndale, MI for southeastern residents, Cass City, MI for eastern residents and Traverse City for northwestern residents of Michigan.

Does insurance cover family counseling services?

Many insurance providers cover online therapy, including family therapy, but coverage varies by plan. It’s best to check with your insurance provider to confirm they cover behavioral health services. We are in-network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Priority Health for Michigan residents.

At Start My Wellness, we will inform you about your eligibility and the services cost before treatment begins. If you have any more questions, check out our cost of therapy page and contact us if you have any more questions.

Finding a Child Therapist

As a parent, you probably have a lot of questions about how to best help your child. Are they learning the right social and emotional skills to be successful in the world? These are some of the reasons why in person therapy is especially important for kids – they need in person relationships that will help them develop.
