About Me: Megan O’Gara
I understand that finding the right therapist can feel intimidating, and I would be honored to join you on your journey to wellness, providing compassionate support every step of the way.
Through my clinical experience, I have worked with a wide range of client populations – from young people navigating thoughts of self-harm to older adults attempting to understand their emotions and behavioral responses. Many clients have come to me to work through issues like anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Using a wide range of tools, including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic therapy, I help individuals negotiate complex life obstacles with an emphasis on empathy and empowerment.
Cultivating self-compassion and resilience will be at the forefront of our work together. I believe in you as a unique individual with the ability to grow and heal. You are the expert on your own life, and it’s my job to foster an intentional presence and care to empower you to make positive changes in your mindset and daily life.
My Unique Approach to Therapy
I have always been drawn to the mental health field. So much of what makes us human lies in our ability to connect and reflect with others. I recognize the importance of individualizing care for folks, knowing that we all approach healing differently. Seeing clients’ hard work and dedication to themselves is what inspires me every day and keeps me in this work.
Those close to me often describe me as empathic, patient, nurturing, and understanding. These qualities influence how I approach my practice. I recognize the strength it takes to ask for help, and I strive to create a comfortable and caring space for clients to share their experiences. I believe in continual growth and maintain a sense of curiosity in my practice to best serve my clients’ needs.
Additionally, I take a patient-centered approach to therapy and regularly ask for feedback from my patients. Common questions I ask are:
- How is the treatment going?
- Are we addressing issues you care about?
- Do you feel you are making measurable progress?
Specialized & Extended Training
I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at the University of Dayton and pursued my Master’s in Social Work at the University of Michigan, specializing in Interpersonal Practice in Integrated Health, Mental Health, and Substance Use.
Outside of my work with clients in the therapeutic setting, I am passionate about the mental health benefits of physical fitness. I am a certified personal trainer & coach HIIT classes in downtown Ferndale. My work as a therapist and as a personal trainer has allowed me to take a whole-patient approach in my work, seeing the combined benefits of therapy and exercise as proven treatments for both mind and body.
Thank you for beginning this investment in yourself. Everyone’s journey looks different, and I look forward to the possibility of being part of yours!
All Start My Wellness therapists attend at least 120 hours of extensive ongoing training and personal development each year on treating a range of mental health concerns. This rigorous instruction allows us to provide patients with the highest quality of service.
