About Me: Natalie Jones-Brown

I am a compassionate and highly experienced Nurse Practitioner dedicated to guiding individuals from all walks of life toward mental well-being. At Start My Wellness, I provide medication management and psychotherapy services to my patients across their lifespans and specialize in treating a broad spectrum of mental health disorders, like depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and insomnia.

Together, we’ll foster a non-judgmental therapeutic space where you feel comfortable speaking openly and exploring mental health challenges. My holistic approach incorporates your unique psychological and biological characteristics, as well as your psychosocial background, to ensure a truly comprehensive understanding of your experiences and treatment goals.

My Unique Approach to Therapy

My practice is deeply rooted in the extensive work I’ve done with typically underserved populations throughout Metro Detroit; people who are HIV positive, LGBTQ+ individuals, victims of sexual assault/trafficking, and those struggling with gender dysphoria. Years of experience, both personally and professionally, have driven me to orient my work around the intersectionalities between mental health and identity.

Having worked in both traditional and non-traditional settings, I’m able to adapt my approach and style to unique patients and situations. My love for travel and encounters with different cultures, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds enriches my work with patients, reinforcing the importance of strong relationships and the power of connection.

Additionally, I take a patient-centered approach to therapy and regularly ask for feedback from my patients. Common questions I ask are:

  • How is the treatment going?
  • Are we addressing issues you care about?
  • Do you feel you are making measurable progress?

Specialized & Extended Training

After working as a bedside nurse for thirteen years, I felt that my reach was limited. Spending so much time with young people in Detroit showed me that too many fear stepping out of their comfort zones and telling their stories. I witnessed firsthand how an absence of these narratives results in fragmented medical and mental health care and, all too often, leads to undiagnosed and untreated mental illness. After over a decade in the profession, I realized I wanted to achieve more in my career to have a stronger impact on my work.

In 2016, I became board certified as an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner and later returned to MSU to complete my Doctorate (DNP) and a Post-Masters (Board Certification) in Psychiatric-Mental Health. With my dual certification, I can continue to be instrumental in my work with patients while also helping to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness.

All Start My Wellness therapists attend at least 120 hours of extensive ongoing training and personal development each year on treating a range of mental health concerns. This rigorous instruction allows us to provide patients with the highest quality of service.
