Psychiatry FAQs
HIDDEN - DO NOT DELETE
Is Psychiatry the same as therapy?
Psychiatry and therapy are related but distinct services. Therapy and counseling both focus on providing emotional support, teaching coping strategies, building strengths, and helping clients navigate challenges they are facing. Psychiatrists can provide therapeutic services, but are also trained in a medical setting to provide medication management, conduct testing, diagnose disorders, and create treatment plans that include therapy and medication management.
Is a Psychiatrist the same as a Psychologist?
When is it best to see a psychiatrist?
It’s best to see a psychiatrist when you’re experiencing persistent mental health challenges that might require a medical diagnosis, medication, or specialized treatment planning. If you’re experiencing persistent symptoms that impact quality of life and ability to engage in daily activities, contact us at (248)-514-4955 and we can schedule an appointment with one of our psychiatric nurse practitioners.
Who can prescribe psychiatric medication?
The main professionals who can prescribe medication are psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners (PNPs), and medical doctors, as they have the pharmacological training required to safely and effectively administer medication.
Can you get prescribed medication online?
While it’s possible to get prescribed medication via telehealth prescriptions, most often psychiatric evaluations are conducted in-person to determine if medication is appropriate and to ensure accuracy and quality of testing. Additionally, controlled substances can not be prescribed online.
Can you take medication without going to therapy?
