Is confrontation ever a good thing?
Many people seek out a therapist because they want someone to listen– to their concerns, stories, fears, and desires. While therapists certainly provide the listening ear, the most meaningful developments in therapy often come from confrontation. The word, confrontation, is often synonymous with accusation and defensiveness, but it is an essential tool in the therapeutic relationship.

How does therapy work, anyway?
About three months into working together, exasperated and exhausted, Todd exclaimed, “I just need you to tell me what to do! Seriously. Please. Just tell me.” His voice was pleading, and it was clear that his confusion and uncertainty were cause for emotional pain.

What is the link between our upbringing and today?
We live in a culture in which we are bombarded by advertisements for optimal performance. We must be our best selves! Advertisements promise us the means to achieve the best experiences, the edge over our competitors. The sales of energy drinks, caffeinated beverages, and supplements rely on the pitch that we can do it all with just a little help: increase our energy and deepen our concentration.

Business strategy is personal
As a psychoanalyst and an entrepreneur, I often think about the commonalities between these two disciplines. Michael Watkins, writing in Harvard Business Review, defines business strategy as “a set of guiding principles that, when communicated and adopted in the organization, generates a desired pattern of decision making…it defines the actions people should take (and not take) and things they should prioritize (and not prioritize) to achieve desired results.”

Empowerment through Knowing Yourself
Recently, a repairman visited my home, which meant that I had to shut my dog in a room during his stay. She did not like this arrangement. I did not like this arrangement. She cried a lot. I tried not to. As I watched her outpourings of emotion—and attempted to manage my own—I was reminded of my work with clients. The Courage to Start Therapy

Often they seek help because they feel stressed by situational pressures. Often their achievements do not give them the happiness and satisfaction that they had anticipated. More often, there are tensions in their primary relationships with a romantic partner, parent, or child.

At all levels of an organization, leaders, as well as employees, confront challenges that require both self-understanding and interpersonal skills.
