I Just Got Diagnosed with ADHD. Now What? (Adults)

Dec 8, 2022 | ADHD, Therapy Expectations

Congratulations! After all those years of wondering what was wrong, you now have an answer. There is a growing population of people getting the first diagnosis of ADHD as an adult. Our ability to detect the condition has improved greatly over the last decade. Professionals can detect ADHD and sort out its symptom pattern from the multitude of other confounding life paths, such as depression, anxiety, stress related disorders, and substance use. Learning you have ADHD is just the beginning of your new life journey. Now What?

It shouldn’t be surprising that while everyone with ADHD has common traits, the way ADHD manifests in a person’s life is as distinct and varied as all other aspects of a person’s life. What does ADHD mean for you, as a person? For some, evaluation for a regimen of medications is the right path. For others, it may not be. Perhaps an ADHD Coach would be the right way to go; perhaps psychological counseling. The most important lesson here is that making a diagnosis of ADHD is actually the easy part. The difficult part is knowing the best course. Working with a professional on identifying ADHD requires that the professional provides the needed support and expertise in helping the individual take the next step in successfully managing the symptoms. ADHD is a chronic health condition. While its symptoms may wax and wane depending on the specifics of a person’s life at any moment, long term strategies for symptom management are crucial.

At Start My Wellness, once you’ve been diagnosed, we are no further than a phone call or email away to answer your questions or provide you advise or consultation on how to manage your symptoms. We have a continuum of care options after diagnosis, including psychotherapy/counseling and medication management with one of our nurse practitioners. If we are not the right setting for your continued care, we will help you find the right setting. The important message is that, as reassuring an accurate diagnosis may be, it is just the beginning of your journey.
