Struggling to find a psychiatrist? You have other options.
People often ask me if I am a psychiatrist. In everyday conversation that word usually means “someone who works in the mental health field.” Most people do not know that a psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health, and that there are many other health professionals who also provide those services.
Historically, psychiatrists focused on treatment that included medication and psychotherapy. Today, these two services are often provided by separate health professionals using a team approach. For example, a psychologist may help a patient understand their symptoms through psychological testing, a psychotherapist will see them regularly for therapy and a nurse practitioner or physician assistant may prescribe their medication.
Sometimes finding a psychiatrist who has availability and accepts your insurance can be difficult. The good news is – you can obtain the help you are looking for through the team approach described above. At Start My Wellness, we take pride in strong collaboration and helping you create the right “team” to get the treatment you need.
Start My Wellness has multiple Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners available for our patients (see bios). They are experienced with the evaluation and diagnosis of mental health disorders and can thoughtfully prescribe and manage medications. You can always call our office with any questions at 248-514-4955.
