Unraveling Codependency: Understanding the Roots and Motivations Behind Dependency in Relationships

Mar 5, 2024 | Mental Wellness

In this video, we delve into the question of why people become codependent, an issue that often emerges from a natural state of dependence that is typical in youth, especially within family and caregiver relationships. Ideally, during our formative years, we rely on our parents or caregivers to provide essential care, guidance, and support. This dependence is a fundamental aspect of our growth and development. However, the journey toward independence is nuanced and influenced by various factors, including cultural background, environmental circumstances, personal qualities, and individual life experiences.

For some individuals, the transition to independence may encounter obstacles or challenges that impede their ability to develop a sense of self-sufficiency. This can result in a continued reliance on others for emotional, psychological, or practical needs, leading to codependent behaviors. In essence, codependency arises when individuals lack confidence in their own skills or feel overwhelmed by the prospect of navigating life’s complexities independently. Consequently, they may perpetuate a pattern of seeking validation, support, or reassurance from others, even when it is detrimental to their well-being.

In this video series, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of codependency, emphasizing its complexity and the need to approach it with empathy and compassion. Rather than viewing codependency as a flaw or a negative trait, we seek to highlight its potential as a catalyst for growth and self-discovery. By exploring the underlying motivations and psychological dynamics of codependency, we hope to foster a more nuanced and empathetic perspective on this intricate aspect of human behavior.
